COMMUNITY FOOTBALL GALA:

Our Community Football gala activities are designed to raise awareness to increase children and young people’s resilience to crime, violence, drug and substance abuse, and gender-based violence. These awareness activities include a melodrama performance with a “goombay” cultural group songs and slogans, and distribution of campaign materials for anti-drug abuse, violence-free election (online and offline violence), and gender equality, including violence against women and girls through leaflets, placards, banners, and on various media in the city (radio/TV/newspapers) to broadcast event activities nationally.

The main purpose of the football gala activities is to promote community cohesion, physical and mental well-being, the interest of children and young people in sports, and the integration of sports into youth crime prevention and criminal justice strategies and to identify good practices on the use of sports (football) to reduce drug and substance abuse, crime and violence amongst young people and their communities at large.

Participating teams: Eight Non-Division teams (14-26yrs) and six Under-12 football teams from various communities in Freetown were registered to take part in a separate two-week gala competition, including female teams to promote gender equality and changes to gender norms, and disabled teams to promote inclusivity and the vision of the Special Olympic Games by providing opportunities for people with disabilities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts and friendship with other community football teams.

The Under-12(yrs.) community football teams are registered to participate in a six-a-side gala, upholding all the attributes and principles of the sport, and learning how to compete fairly, and skilfully within the rules of the game.

Each participating adult team was given £50 to sustain them throughout the two-week gala competition, with a complete set of football jerseys for each team, £200 for the winner, and £100 for the second-position team.
